Postal Services
There is a postal service in Bahrain and for international mail it is very good, but virtually everyone in Bahrain gets a PO Box as the home delivery system may often result in you finding those important documents lurking under the bougainvillea in your garden, weeks after they arrived. Getting a PO Box is a very simple business. Just go to your most convenient post office (there is also one in the Bahrain Mall) with your CPR card. The process is immediate and the annual cost is just BD13. You will receive two keys for your box and you are able to check it at any time the post office is open, and most post offices have boxes which are accessible even when the post office is closed. Most expatriates rely on their mail being delivered to their place of work, using their company PO Box, but check with your company that this is acceptable before you distribute its PO Box to your family and friends.
If you are sending gifts home you may find it cheaper and more secure to use one of the many courier companies in Bahrain such as DHL or FEDEX. Alternatively you can take out insurance, or register the package you are sending.
The Postal Directorate comes under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Transportation, and the switchboard number is 1753 4534. There is a registered local and international delivery service known as Barid Mumtaz, which is supposed to be an express service, but there are frequent letters of complaint in the GDN about late delivery.
