Markets/souks
Souks or markets are commonly found in Kuwait and are an important cultural reminder and steadfast tradition of the Arabian trading heritage. Most areas have at least one souk although the most renowned are the Gold Souk, Old Heritage Souk, Textile Souk and the Persian Carpet Souk. The Friday Market, Second-Hand Market, Iranian Market, and the Fish, Meat and Vegetable Markets are all very popular.
The fish sold in markets are usually freshly caught in the Arabian Gulf, but you can also find fish from neighbouring countries. Due to the hot temperatures and the desert climate, vegetables are hard to grow in Kuwait. Despite the climate there are two main markets and farming areas being developed in Wafra and Abdally. Here you can find vegetables that are locally grown and on Fridays many people drive the 45 minutes to buy fresh vegetables. Most souks and markets are open in the morning and later on in the afternoon, being closed between 13:00 and 16:30 for prayers and siesta. One exception is the Friday Market, which opens all day on Thursdays and Fridays. If you are interested in an item, don’t forget that you can probably knock the price down if you have a go at bargaining. Most of the sellers in the souks are very friendly and are more than happy to show you what they’ve got in stock. If the price is not suitable for you, then walk away and you will most likely find that the seller runs after you to agree to your price. But be prepared to take your time and be patient if you really want to secure that real bargain.
