Ruwi Souk Street
Better known as Ruwi High Street, this is a very long, double-laned street that starts at the Al Hamriya Roundabout. It’s the place to go for anything from toilet seats to diamond rings, state of the art hi-fi systems to Delsey luggage and every thing else in between.
While most of the shops cater to lower-income families, expats of all nationalities come here for the excellent and inexpensive picture framing shops and tailors, and to buy textiles, appliances and gold. Shops are generally open from 09:00 to 13:00 and from 16:30 to 21:00.
There are various textile shops, electronics stores and jewellers along the main road, with many official dealerships for international brands of watches, cameras and white goods. Bargaining is encouraged, and if you can out-haggle the shopkeeper then you can walk away with a bargain.
Several smaller roads branch off the high street, and these are home to speciality shops and occasional temporary markets. Honda Road, for example, is devoted to building and construction materials. Smaller shopping areas down the side roads will yield fake designer jeans, Tin Tin T-shirts and the tacky gifts that have made this area famous.
There are plenty of coffee shops in the main street, offering mostly battered Indian snacks, masala tea, coffee or fresh coconut juice. You’ll also find some small but excellent restaurants serving Filipino, Chinese, Indian, Sri Lankan, Arabic and Turkish food.
