If you’re looking for wooden furniture, get yourself down to Dempsey Road. Situated just across from the Botanic Gardens in the old English army barracks, it’s a pleasant place to shop for furniture and art under lush trees and warm tropical breezes. The furniture places stock items from the region, mostly Indonesia, Thailand and China. Many of the stores aren’t air-conditioned so you might want to don shorts and a light T-shirt in anticipation of the heat. If you’re prone to mosquito bites, spray some repellant on before you head out. Recently a few wine bars and restaurants have set up shop here too. Most notable of these is PS Café (p.409), a beautiful restaurant surrounded by glass walls that overlook the lush rainforest. Reservations need to be made weeks in advance though.
