Alcohol
Anyone over 21 can buy alcohol from bars, clubs, most outdoor food centres, supermarkets and convenience stores. As with cars and cigarettes though, the government imposes rather high taxes on alcohol so it’s worthwhile stocking up when you come through the airport. Prices at the airport’s duty free shop are 40 to 70% lower than at the supermarkets. But you can only bring in one litre of spirits, a bottle of wine and three cans (or one litre) of beer – and only if you’ve been out of the country for more than 48 hours. Arrivals from Malaysia aren’t eligible to buy alcohol from duty free.
Wine appreciation has increased here and to cater to this fast-growing trend, there are several specialty wine stores. Even supermarkets like Carrefour now have wine sections. Australian and New Zealand wines are especially popular and South African, American and European wines are also all available.
As a guideline, a mediocre bottle of wine will cost you upwards of $25 and a bottle of Smirnoff Red vodka in the supermarket sells for $54 (the same bottle costs $21.20 at the airport).
