Baby Items
The birth rate has dropped in Singapore but you’d never think it from the number of shops that cater to the baby market. Walk into any shopping mall and you’ll find at least two baby shops. There’s even a mall that focuses on babies and children – Forum The Shopping Mall (p.365) at the start of Orchard Road houses the city’s largest Toys R Us store as well as dozens of baby fashion, toys, books, furniture and gadget outlets. Toys R Us has a baby section where you can stock up on nursery basics like baby prams and changing tables.
Kiddy Palace, which you’ll find in most suburban malls, is the biggest chain store to specialise in baby and children’s items. Here, you can get your hands on an extensive range of baby carriages including the ever-popular McLaren car seats, teethers, rattles, diaper bags, breast pumps, clothing and toys.
The department store that probably has the most extensive and affordable range of baby items is Robinson’s at Centrepoint on Orchard Road. The UK’s Mothercare chain is also here, with six outlets around the island. Before heading in, you can also view their products on www.mothercare.com.sg.
IKEA is a good place to pick up basic children’s furniture and toys. Prices here are comparable to, and perhaps even slightly cheaper, than in the UK. You can even leave your children in the playground where they can swim in a room full of plastic balls with babysitters to keep an eye on them while you whiz around the store picking up your essentials.
If you prefer shopping from the comfort of your favourite armchair there’s www.babysayang.com which should have just about everything you need. Local e-store www.parenthings.com means organic baby and nursing products are just a mouse click away. You can make appointments to view their products as well.
