Camera Equipment
Singapore is one of the best places in the world to buy cameras and peripheries. Taxes on electronics are low and if you’re just passing through, you can get a rebate off the GST.
Keen shutterbugs should head straight to The Peninsula Plaza, Peninsula Shopping Centre and the Adelphi. They’re across the road from one another and most shops in this area are trustworthy. They’ll give you a fair price partly because of the keen competition, and partly because they’re run by enthusiasts.
Cathay Photo Store (www.cathayphoto.com.sg) at Peninsula Plaza is one outlet in a chain that sells all major brands of cameras and accessories. Over 40 years old, it’s a well-known hangout for professional and amateur photographers. Alan Photo Trading (www.alanphoto.com.sg) at Sim Lim Square is also well-established and offers the widest range of photographic supplies including popular brands and models of SLRs and digital cameras. John 3:16 at Funan Centre is another good shop for professional photography equipment.
If a digital pocket camera is what you want, simply head to the nearest electronic chain store. Harvey Norman, Best Denki and Courts consistently quote fair prices and you won’t have to haggle for hours to get a good deal. They won’t be the lowest price in town, but it will be pretty close. You could also price the object of your desire at an electronics chain store and then call or visit Alan Photo or Paris Silk in Holland Village to compare quotes.
If you’re up for a good bargaining session, head down to Sim Lim Square, the electronics Mecca of Singapore. If you do walk away with a prize from here though, be sure to get receipts and the right warranty cards. Some stores offer Singapore-only warranties or no warranty at all.
Also be aware that camera models can differ too – certain digital cameras from Sony, for example, are only released in Europe and Asia, so if you’re buying a camera to use it in North America, it will be a challenge to get it fixed there.
Photo developing stores are everywhere in Singapore, and because of fierce competition, many offer 30 minute processing time and reasonable prices. The developing quality though can be mediocre so for high-quality, professional prints go where most of the professional photographers go and head for RGB (www.rgb-color.com).
For repairs, the most reputable shop in town is probably the Camera Workshop at Peninsula Shopping Centre.
